Have you ever gotten a pop up that read: “Want to heal for more? Buy this potion!” Western gamers may not be familiar with it, however, Eastern gamers know this as one thing: Micro-transactions

I personally like the idea of micro-transactions. Given the ability to pick and choose which items I want to spend my money on, as opposed to paying for an entire game and ‘questing’ for said items. But I feel that the MT stores only work with games that have free-to-play models. When you make people pay a monthly sub, to access your content, then have them pay more to get ‘extras’, it can QUICKLY kill a fan base. The store can only really work if the prices are within reason, also. For example, in Allods, the cost of  items that were needed to access high level PvP were very high. It caused an uproar among the fan base and for those who had simply heard about the game.

My guess is, the ration of people that would welcome a MT/Monthly sub hybrid, to those who do not are small. However, I’m curious to know what various opinions on microtransactions, in general are out there. Feel free to leave a comment below. With his first post for MMO Junkies, daltoncarl takes a look at a popular intellectual property and it’s attempt to enter the browser-based MMO market.

Within the last 3 months, many developers have been pushing out their browser based MMOs. In the past years not many have really lived up to what they could have other than ‘Runescape’ but lets not talk about that. More then likely they all just turn into a social game full of kids. Lately though there’s been some released that do look very promising both visual and in game play. One that has caught many eyes very early in its stage is the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ MMO that will be purely browser powered.

“Battlestar Galactica is a supremely game-able intellectual property, with compelling character classes, a fantastic array of ships and weaponry, multiple worlds, and a dramatic storyline,” said vice president and general manager of digital platforms for Universal Partnerships & Licensing Bill Kispert.

This game looks to be the most promising game has ever released on a browser, but with that comes unwanted but necessary competition. We can all expect many games to becoming to just our simple interweb window. I’m going to continue to follow this game, and many others that start to come out the woodwork with the many upcoming events in the game world.
